Hello all,
Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 27 at 7pm in the Cosgrove library. We'll have a special guest--our interim principal, Kristen Paolini. We're so glad that she is able to come and we are looking forward to getting to know her better.
We're looking for more people to get involved with LOTS. We had a fantastic first year! We formed almost exactly a year ago--just before Thanksgiving in 2017. And we've had a great first year, but there is so much more that we could do with more hands involved. In addition, our president and our book fair chair have 8th grade students this year, so they will be leaving Cosgrove in June and we'll have some shuffling among officers. Some options, in addition to officers and people to run the book fair, include coordinating school reward programs from Tyson and Coke, setting up other fundraising efforts, running events, coming up with new ideas, and more. So come get involved. The more the merrier!
The 6th grade holds a Career Day each year. This year's Career Day will be Friday, January 18. If you might be interested in sharing about your career, complete this survey:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6NBXJCW
Questions can be directed to us or to Erin Bell, the 6th grade counselor at [email protected].
If you're interested in volunteering at Cosgrove on an ongoing basis, there are several opportunities at Cosgrove. Parents and community members volunteer in the Cosgrove library, and help students during flex, for example. It's a nice way to see how things work at Cosgrove while giving your kids their own space. Talk to Christina Bowerman in the Community Education Office to find a way to get involved. She can be reached at [email protected] and 585-349-5681.
Hope to see you on the 27th!

Hello all! Welcome to a new year at Cosgrove! We wanted to send out a bit of information on LOTS for this school year. We got off to a great start as a new parent organization at Cosgrove last year and we are excited to be back. Below you'll find a little bit about LOTS (for our new 6th grade parents--welcome!), some small and simple ways to help support the teachers and staff at Cosgrove, as well as info on how to connect with other parents--primarily through social media. Please don't hesitate to reach out.

What is LOTS?
Sara Snarr
President, LOTS
Loving On Teachers & Staff
What is LOTS?
- LOTS stands for Loving On Teachers & Staff and that is what we do. And that's it. No fundraiser brochures. No holiday shop. No family carnival to run and clean up after. We do small events that help the lovely people who work at Cosgrove know how much we appreciate them.
- Last year was the first year that Cosgrove had a parent organization in many years, and the teachers LOVED it! They sent us emails, handwritten thank you notes, and were just so adorably appreciative. So jump on the bandwagon and help us make their day/week/year.
- We run on optional donations of cash and supplies. If you would like to make a donation, there is a box at the security desk that is checked daily--especially this time of year when we are shamelessly asking for funds. Think about what you might spend on gifts for teachers and perhaps send in a comparable amount. Checks can be made out to Spencerport CSD with LOTS in the memo line. All funds go directly to teacher appreciation efforts. You are also welcome to contact us directly at [email protected] with questions about donations. You can see below what we have planned for this year, but we need $$$ to make it happen so please think about sending in a little something.
- We meet four times each year at 7pm in the Cosgrove Library. This really is a low-key organization compared with elementary PTOs! So please join us. This year's dates are:
- Thursday, September 27
- Tuesday, November 27
- Wednesday, February 6
- Monday, April 22
- $end in some ca$h! All joking aside, it did take a few dollars last year but we were so proud of what we were able to accomplish with just a few hundred dollars. We will happily put your donation to good use and you can feel like you have done a good thing that will be appreciated by awesome people who take care of your 11/12/13 year old for hundreds of hours this year ...
- Collect and send in labels. A collection bin is on the table by the security desk for Box Tops, and Tyson labels.
- We're hosting a back-to-school breakfast THIS FRIDAY for our staff. Click here to sign up to send in a food item with your child such a donuts, orange juice, etc. Items can be dropped off at the security desk or you can contact us directly to make other arrangements: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c4ea4a92ba6fe3-cosgrove
- We are also looking for people to get more involved planning other things on the calendar. Let us know if you'd like to coordinate or help with one of the following. Co-chairs are definitely welcome, so grab a buddy, or just volunteer for an hour once. We'll also put out calls for donations and volunteers closer to the day, but if you're interested in helping out behind the scenes, let us know ASAP. And if you want to put something on your calendar now, pencil it in and let us know:
- Back to School Breakfast--looking for 1-2 parents to help out for 1-3 hours this Friday morning within the 7-10am window.
- Curriculum Night 9/19--providing a light dinner. Need a few volunteers to decorate and refill food.
- Parent-Teacher Conference Nights 10/24 and 11/14--we'll provide light snacks. Need volunteers.
- Book Fair and Multicultural Night 11/2--volunteers needed in the evening.
- Holiday Cocoa & Coffee Bar 12/21--looking for 1-2 volunteers for extra hands in the morning.
- Mailbox Notes and/or Treats 11/20, 2/14, and sometime in March--if you'd like to coordinate and/or help with one or all three of these, shoot us an email.
- Early Release Day 1/18--the teachers work late this day and we'll provide lunch.
- Teacher Appreciation Week 5/6-10--need volunteers, donations, and planners with creativity.
- End of school year treat--June 28. We sent them off with a big sugary cake last year and they loved it. Takes $$. :)
- Cosgrove LOTS Discussion Group on Facebook: this is where the discussion happens. What's the plan for the next staff event? Who's doing what, and how can I help? This is also a great place to ask for info--who has the summer reading list, how late is the building open, etc. If you want to pick only one social media platform to get on, this is it.
- Cosgrove LOTS public page on Facebook: We post info and final plans on this page.
- Twitter @Cosgrove_LOTS: general info and plans, as well as shout outs to our great teachers & staff.
- Our website has periodic news updates, meeting minutes and agendas, as well as contact info for other district parent groups like boosters and elementary PTOs. The address is: http://cosgrovelots.weebly.com/
We officers met over the summer to do some broad overview planning. Notes are below! Can't wait for this year!

What a FANTASTIC first year for LOTS! We finished with a bang after an incredibly eventful 7 months since our founding in late November! Our last official act was to drop off this celebratory cake to our Cosgrove teachers and staff who have worked so hard this school year. We so appreciate them and hope they have a relaxing and enjoyable summer!
Our last meeting was held June 4. Agenda and Minutes below.
Over the summer, tell your friends about LOTS--especially families of our new 6th graders. And in the fall, look for small ways to help appreciate and support our staff and teachers. The best way to keep up to date on what's happening is through our Facebook LOTS Discussion Group. We also have:
LOTS has two parents on Cosgrove's shared decision making team, the Building Planning Team, Sara Snarr and Julie D'Ovidio. This team of staff, teachers, administrators, and parents oversees the big picture direction for Cosgrove. Minutes for these monthly meetings can be found here: http://cosgrove.spencerportschools.org/building_planning_team__school_to_watch
Click on the link, and then follow further links to access the Team's OneNote folder. If you ever have questions, thoughts, or input on topics discussed in these meetings, please reach out to Sara or Julie. May's meeting included discussion on cellphones in the classroom, students laptops over the summer, grading policies, district resources available to help with social and mental health issues, and how LOTS can help new 6th grade parents adjust to having a student at Cosgrove, among other things.
Have a great summer, and we'll see you in the fall!

Treasurer’s Report:
- We raised $215 this year through donations and are down to $170. It was decided that LOTS would provide an end of the year cake for Cosgrove staff on June 22.
- For the time being, we’ll use the district’s W-9
- How did things go this year? Discussion ensued on LOTS activities for the school year.
- Meetings this year piggybacked on Cosgrove events like concerts, drama club, and the awards night. Discussed the pros and cons and decide to try holding meetings on nights with no other events next year. We’ll reevaluate in a year.
New Business:
- How can we help parents feel like they can be involved without being burdened? Many ideas discussed. One example: Will share list on social media of things you can do in less than half an hour to help out with LOTS.
- We’ll hold our last meeting next year in May before parents are busy with the end of the year
- Staff/Teacher Appreciation Week next year will be a baked potato bar
- We will try to provide a breakfast/treat for teachers on the Friday of the first week of school
- BPT supports our posting information on topics of mutual concern. Ie screen time, social issues, teen mental health, etc.
- We’ll have a table at Curriculum night. Can we participate in other ways?
- From Ned: next year, staff will focus on increasing understanding of social and emotional learning for students. Guest professional development and educators will come interact with staff to increase their sensitivity to these areas.
- Chris Merle from the Children’s Institute
- Erin Hassel (district social worker at the district’s Family Support Center) and Kate Zobkiw (district drug counselor) will speak with teachers on the first day of school on mental health

We have some opportunities for families and friends to help out at Cosgrove. Shoot us an email at [email protected] if you'd like to help out or have any questions.
- Ms. Mongold, Spanish teacher, is coordinating a visiting musician for Spanish students from both the HS and Cosgrove during the day on Friday, May 4. We can help out by providing a few extra adults to help sell souvenirs at a table after, and we'll get to enjoy the music. Concert 9-10:30, and helping from 10:30-11:30.
- Ms. Bell, counseling, is overseeing the 8th grade graduation on Friday, June 1. She could use a few extra adults to set up tables and oversee the equitable distribution of cupcakes after the ceremony. This is a great chance for 6th and 7th grade parents to pay it forward.
- Lastly, TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK is coming up and we have some awesome and super fun things planned for the teachers! (See the minutes below.) But .... we need your help. We're looking for people to send in small items to help with a luncheon we are planning for Friday. Cash donations to cover paper goods, etc. are also an easy option. This link has all the details: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0c4ea4a92ba6fe3-lots
Thank you and enjoy the sunshine!

The following was sent on our Cosgrove LOTS email list. Email us at [email protected] if you'd like to receive these emails. Also, if you'd like to help with any of the projects and plans mentioned below, send us an email at that same address. Thanks!
Hello all,
Our Facebook group is growing by leaps and bounds. We are up to 182 members! Please share and help us spread the word and get as many parents, care givers, and community members in the loop: https://www.facebook.com/groups/CosgroveLOTS/?source_id=1946589455591155
Our next LOTS meeting will be on Monday, April 16 at 5:45 in the library just before the incoming 6th grade parent night. We're looking for a few people to help out at a LOTS information table during the 6th grade evening after our meeting. Respond to this email if you're interested in helping reach out to incoming 6th grade families for an hour or two that evening. Our meeting will focus mainly on plans for Teacher Appreciation Week in May.
The 6th grade career day was held on March 23rd. We went and observed this annual event and will be meeting with counseling staff in the coming weeks to talk about how we can partner with them and offer assistance next year. If you're interested on being in on some of that planning, respond to this email with your interest. This event is one part of Cosgrove's 3 year program helping students prepare for college and careers. In 7th grade, all students go on a field trip to WEMOCO. In 8th grade, all students go on a local college tour. This year's students will tour the University of Rochester. If you'd like to participate in future career days by sharing and demonstrating why you love your profession, please fill out our brief survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6NBXJCW The students LOVED hearing about various careers and they had excellent questions for the presenters from our community! And the presenters seemed to really enjoy interacting with the students! It was a fantastic afternoon all around.
Teacher Appreciation Week is approaching in early May. We have some plans forming, and need to solidify the rest of our celebrations. The family who owns our local McDonalds is a Cosgrove family, and they have generously volunteered to provide breakfast treats for staff and faculty on Tuesday of that week. LOTS will be providing a lunch for staff and faculty on Friday of the same week. We would love to also plan smaller ways to show our appreciation throughout the week. We'll be starting an email discussion in the next few days--if you'd like to be in on that planning, respond to this email ASAP and we'll include you in the thread. We'll finalize plans at our LOTS meeting on April 16.
Cosgrove's shared decision making team, the Building Planning Team, met on March 19. Among other topics, the BPT discussed school safety in detail. To see the agenda and notes, go to the Cosgrove website, select the Building Planning Team tab, then choose the current month from the list on the left. Any concerns can be passed on to the LOTS parent reps on the team, Sara Snarr and Julie D'Ovidio, and we can bring your questions to the table.
And lastly, please see the message below from Spanish teacher, Jenn Mongold. If you'd like to help out with this student event in May, respond to this email and we'll get time and details to you, and make sure she has a list of who to expect. Thank you, and enjoy your break!

Good morning LOTS parents!
I am hoping that you have heard from your children that we will be hosting Emir Sensini in concert here in Spencerport on Friday, May 4th. This enrichment opportunity is open to all 7th and 8th grade language and ELL students. Tickets have been on sale for over a month, and sales closed this Thursday.
I am wondering if there are 3 of you that would be willing to come help at the concert? Marie Campanaro (retired Cosgrove Spanish teacher) will be here to set up a table to sell souvenirs after the concert. I am thinking she may need a few extra hands to help with this. Anyone interested?
Thank you for all you do for us at Cosgrove! You have been such a positive addition to our school culture!
Have a great day,
Jenn
